Last month, I reviewed The Pawn by Skye Warren. It was easily one of the best books I read this year, so naturally I couldn’t wait to get my hands on its sequel The Knight. When I did, I wasn’t disappointed. While it isn’t quite as enjoyable as the first, it is still a good book and fans of the series must continue reading.

The plot is every bit as complicated as the beginning. The chess game metaphor provides infinite possibilities and this is where Ms. Warren excels. There is something about revenge we crave. In The Knight, we find Avery left with a broken heart and a sense of betrayal from Gabriel Miller. There is an aura of sadness because Avery is left living in a crappy hotel on the wrong side of town.

During much of the story, I wanted Gabriel to swoop in and rescue her, of course Ms. Warren doesn’t make it easy for us readers. Instead, the situation compels Avery to seek and destroy Gabriel and everyone else who is responsible for losing her mother’s house and her father’s incapacitation.

This book delves more into the history of Avery’s mother and father with the help of a diary. Their past was merely hinted at in the first book. This time around, we have hints of some sinister efforts on behalf of Avery’s father in regards to the death of his wife and the extremes he may have implemented with Gabriel to settle his debts.

Avery spends more time debating and denying her desire of Gabriel even when it’s obvious it’s his purpose to break her and take away the most important thing she has remaining – the memory of a loving family. While she is torn between how much she should hate Gabriel and how much her body craves him, she eventually accepts the idea he is more likely the lesser of two evils.

All in all, The Knight is a remarkable read. Its premise is brilliant and it’s executed well. You have twists and turns you don’t expect. The sexual chemistry between Avery and Gabriel remains hotter than ever. There’s something to be gained when you want the one person you know may not be good for you. Fans of the first book will certainly want to read the continuation after the shell shocking cliffhanger. If you haven’t already, I’d recommend reading the The Pawn before you attempt this one.

The third book, The Castle, is scheduled for release on April 4, 2017 so keep your eye out for our review.
