He leaned closer, testing his theory about whether she’d move. She didn’t, brown eyes darting toward his lips before meeting his knowing smirk. She was just as affected as him, and his body involuntarily moved closer. She responded to his needs as though on rote, and he got so close he could feel her breath on his. Just. One. Second.
They jerked apart when the screen door slammed behind them. Dillon stood there, arms crossed, head cocked as he assessed the situation. “Just friends, huh?”
Clare stood up, refusing to look at him as she wiped imaginary dust of her jeans. “I’m going inside. You two tell me when it’s time to go.” She scampered like her ass was on fire and the only way to put it out was inside the kitchen, and Alex once again found himself cursing the way this family popped up at inopportune times. He looked back to find cousin assessing him silently, as a predator stalks his prey, waiting for them to make the next move. He was going to find out quickly that Alex was no prey, and more apt to kill than be killed.
“You have to slam the door like that?” He looked back out across the fields, knowing his current seat made him vulnerable, but refusing to move. If Dillon wanted to think he was dealing with a pansy ass Hollywood lightweight, the kind with expensive suits and smooth hands he wasn’t going to steer him wrong. He’d been underestimated his whole life, this would be no exception.
“Nah. I just wanted to watch her jump. She’s usually funnier when she’s embarrassed. Guess she must really like you.”
Alex snorted at the thought. She liked him about as much as a mouse loved a baby rattler.
“We taking her to the shop with us? I thought you said last night she wouldn’t know what to do.”
“Hell no, I’m not taking her to the shop with us. She’d be in the way and start demanding answers as soon as we get there. I need to figure out what I’m dealing with first, and you need to get me contact information for your current workers.”

Marie Garner is a North Carolina girl who grew up in piedmont and attended college in the mountains of Cullowhee, NC. She graduated with a degree in Social Studies education, and spent several years spreading her love of history and political science to young minds.
Her nose was stuck in a book since she was little, and she spent years writing down all the crazy ideas floating in her head. She has published the first two books in her trilogy, The Misses Trilogy, with Miss Hollywood slated for release in Fall 2016. Her writing explores the complexities of relationships, something she’s all too familiar with as part of a large, crazy family.
When she’s not locked in her writing cave she can be found cheering on the Washington Redskins or watching The Walking Dead, and thinks there’s nothing sweeter than a cold Diet Coke.
